Happy Hump Day Glammies!! I'm just going to roll Talk Tuesday and Watch It Wednesday together in this little ditty that was rolling around the internet.
I'm sure this in entirely too much information (like the tag says) but I thought it was fun to give you guys a little snippet into my LIFE woo!!! Lol
Hey guys, so I decided to combine the days, and not only offer up some video's to watch, but also tips and kind of a day to day on what it's like living with Fibromyalgia. I thought I would tackle this and then maybe the whole Thyroid/Hormone Disease some other time. These tend to go hand in hand, but it seems like it would be such a long post that I'm sure it would bore most of you.
So, the past two weeks for me have been particularly hard living with Fibro. For those of you who don't know what Fibromyalgia is, it's basically a chronic pain disease, where in my case, my mind communicates with my body telling it that it has been hit by a truck everyday. There are tons of theories on why people get Fibro. My story, the catalyst seems to have come from living too long in pain from nerve damage, so my brain is now all messed up from it. But, they have lately started thinking that it may have been earlier then that going hand in hand with having thyroid issues.
ANYWAYS, for me, Fibro has manifested in a lot of things. Like I said, everyday I wake up feeling like someone literally took a baseball bat to me while I was sleeping. Or for a better analogy, visualize when you first start working out and you've gone harder then you normally would, you know that day after or two days after where you feel exhausted and it hurts to raise your arms, and your whole body feels stiff, and you say "ow, ow, ow" every time you go to sit down? BINGO, that's me everyday.
I also have periods of time where my memory is super foggy and I can instantly turn from being in a good mood to incredibly cranky (I think the mood thing is mostly when my pain level goes up). It always hurts to be touched by people, even someone playfully squeezing my shoulder results in full out excruciating pain in my body. I've had to cut out lots of foods because I never know when having one of them will flare something up and I will literally become swollen like I have bad arthritis. Some weeks like a few weeks ago I barely got sleep but could function. This week with the changing weather, my body can't keep up and now I have to sleep like 12-14 hours. AND I'M NOT ONE TO SLEEP THAT MUCH! Even setting alarms I sleep through them, which is so weird, so.very.weird.
Lots and Lots of Sleep
The worst way that Fibro has manifested is in the anxiety I have, making plans or going out in public, which may have shown up in me not always doing regular blogposts like I have been trying to do or being at everything I RSVP to. Making plans is hard because if I don't feel good, going somewhere is the hardest thing. Sometimes putting on clothes or sitting down to do my makeup can feel like the most insurmountable task that I just get back into bed and watch movies instead and then I feel bad because I disappoint so many people including myself. Like I want to be at home when I could be doing fun things with my friends?! UH NO.
It's really hard for me to talk about all this, because for awhile, my medications were working and I was on an upward swing, but lately with my Thyroid meds being all messed up it has literally thrown me back down to a place I haven't been at in almost 6 months, which is really upsetting and hard to explain to my friends and well, everyone! I'm not the kind of person that likes to admit when I'm not feeling good or anything like that. Let's just say, my doctor's literally have to yell at me to slow down before I hit the wall, ALL OF THE TIME. Because I push myself until they yell at me, I have these crashes, where I will then be unable to literally move out of bed for days on end. It's something that we are constantly working on and I'm learning how to build up my strength and stamina to be able to do what a normal person can handle in a day at this point. It is maddening and excruciating work, as my occupational therapist says, "This is one thing that isn't going to come easy to you. You aren't going to be able to breeze through this like college, you are going to have to do real work everyday for the rest of your life, in the smallest baby steps you will ever see." AAAHHHHHHHH I don't DO baby steps!!!
Hot baths help relieve muscle tension and pain...but it's still boring
The one nice thing (well not really nice I wish this wasn't the case) is that my mom has also been diagnosed with Fibro, so I can talk to her about it, she understands how I feel, and she gets when I need to rest or sleep till 10am when I'm at her house. We both are constantly searching out new herbs and doctors to see if that will help us.
So I guess I'm telling all of you so that you can keep me in check as well, and also to understand why in some of my video's or blog posts I sigh a lot or skip out for a couple days. It's not that I'm being neglectful it's usually that just getting up and making myself tea or breakfast can feel like the only thing I can handle for the day. It isn't depression, so please don't comment about that, it's just literally being in teeth gritting pain all day everyday. It can cause a girl to eventually lose her mind.
Of course, I always get lectured that there are ways to speed the getting back to normal process along, like not getting stressed out (which is one of the ways to make it worse BUT explain to me how you can just not ever be stressed...I mean seriously) and "resting" and taking baths, but if you have a normal brain you realize how hard and unrealistic that is to do.
BUT I'M GOING TO TRY...
This guy is a little hokey, but I think he explains things really well, and it's been nice to read his book and watch his little rants about this "new" disease which actually isn't that new. I've also included his tips with dealing with someone with Fibro. Although I'm not asking you to treat me with kid gloves or hand out doses of sympathy (you guys know how I hate being looked at like a sick puppy!) It is something to keep in mind.
I guess it's hard. For a long time I woke up thinking and praying that this morning all the pain will have gone away, it took me until a couple months ago to realize that it most likely never will. Please give allowances for people with chronic pain, it literally changes everything about them, even if you can't see it! If you think you may have Fibro or Thyroid disease or anything of that nature, go talk to your doctor! Or message me and I can send you some wonderful literature about it or refer you to the doctor's I see in the greater Seattle area. Also! If you'd like to see a blog post about the diet I'm on for dealing with chronic pain please let me know!! I'd love to tell you all the things that help manage flare ups!
I love to travel, I got it from my momma, and I especially love traveling during the winter. I know that sounds weird to many, but for our family, tons of our larger family trips were scheduled around the holidays.
This Thanksgiving I went with my mom and her husband Jon to see his extended family on Whidbey Island, it was gorgeous, and always fills the need in me to be somewhere new every month. We stayed in Coupeville, which is one of the cutest towns, and reminds me so much of the East Coast that it made me want to book a ticket back there immediately!
We walked through Ebey Landing that was as if we were walking through the cliffs in Scotland and yea, I can't say enough about that little island. I took some wonderful pictures and a little video for you guys to check out.
I don't know what it is about the past couple of weeks, but I feel the change that is happening, and I know a lot of my friends have to. What change? The ending of major relationships, the saying goodbye to long friendships, and the moving forward in a very calm more "adult" type way (mostly lol). Lately, this seems to be the conversation I have with everyone.
I remember when I had such a hard time saying goodbye to people. When I was little I clung to my mom's leg everyday when she would try to drop me off at daycare. In school, I always wanted to be the first one to get to a place and the last one to leave...never wanting to miss anything. I also always wanted to be liked by everyone who met me and friends, always friends. I even made it a point to try and stay friends with all my exes and fling-type things.
Until I realized, only very recently, that that isn't the case, that's not how life works. We change, we grow, we outgrow each other and the relationships we created with people. We do fucked up things to each other and sometimes those things don't fully ever get forgotten. Not everyone is going to like you, and you in turn, aren't going to like everybody. That's just how life is!!!
PHEW did that take the pressure off you like it did me? Last year I finally embraced that and grasped the concept. It was like a huge relief off my shoulders. So many years trying to be congenial finally ended, and with that, the year of saying my goodbyes to relationship's and friendship's that no longer served me, or the people I was in them with either.
Don't get me wrong, when I started on this journey of goodbyes, it was literally like ripping limbs off. I cried. I stressed out. I would argue with myself to just give it one more chance before I opened my mouth and made a mistake. But you know, every time I got through the shock, I felt better. Freer.
It opened me up to start relationships with other people who wanted to be around me, who I was better suited for. Funny how the flow of energy works.
I won't lie, the last person I had to say goodbye to, was the absolute hardest. Maybe that's why I put it off so long, well until this week that is. I mean, it's hard to say goodbye to someone that you've told every secret to and shared great joys and greater sorrows with. But at the same time, it's hard to stay in a relationship where when you met said person you were the furthest from your authentic self that you could be and the box they think of you in, is no longer the box you yourself inhabit.
Sometimes it's in the reaffirmation of one's authentic self, that we have to let go of the idea's and the past stories that no longer serve us to say hello to new experiences and happiness.
That's what this last relationship represented to me, not that there wasn't and isn't great love there, but I held on to it, even though every interaction ended in fights or frustration at the end, because what would I have if I didn't have the edgy stories and memories that we had created together? Who would I be if I weren't that girl?
There is a relief though, that comes, for me it's the relief of allowing myself to fully embrace the life I have set out in front of me. It's allowed me to finally take ownership and personal stock of the ideas that no longer serve me now that they aren't connected in my brain with people, or relationships. That's an entirely different blog post though lol.
I love you all, and if you are having a hard time, you know I always have an ear for you dear glammies! Goodbyes are a hard part of life, but in the pain of that, the Hello's seem even that much sweeter.
It's Tuesday and I don't believe every one of our chat's has to be intense and thought provoking. But, I do love telling you guys about what I'm up to and little tidbits about my life, it's kind of fun! Hopefully these little chats will one day make it so I won't have to explain my quirkiness ALL the time lol. Yea, we'll see about how that pans out...hahaha.
So are we all thinking, where did October go? Or is it just me? I know the older I get the more I keep thinking, where has the time gone? I also am in this weird holding pattern...like I KNOW it's November but my brain is trying to skip it completely. Like it's either September or December. No in-between...the story of my life.
I will say though, that October was such a wonderful month for the split second I mentally can place myself back into it, that I look back at it with glowing smiles and fond memories. And for definitely sure the last two weeks-ish have taken the cake. With weddings and makeup shows kicking it all off and then ending with houseguests, 21st birthdays, Halloween, and the concert that changed my life Rufus Wainwright.
I don't even know where to begin...
This month I made a pact with myself and a friend that we would spend more time with the people we love and not travel as much. I'm not sure if I completely cut down on craziness but I do know that I spent more time at home. Which was wonderful, considering I hadn't spent more then a couple days in my apartment since I would say about June. Needless to say it was nice to put away the suitcase for awhile. I actually got things done at my place!! Like moving furniture, setting up a makeup station for filming, and doing things like putting up curtains! Almost 2 years here and I hadn't changed a thing since I moved in. It was wonderful and made me want to have houseguests FINALLY.
Tami came to stay!! Graffiti Garages & DDR
And houseguests I had!! My lovely friend Tami came to stay with me, it was the most wonderful way to break in my "new" place. We toured around Tacoma and most nights/days had long conversations involving wonderful libations hahaha then the finale was taking our other younger great friend Julia out for her 21st birthday. Can I say we had so much fun?! Though I will side note: Thug bar on a Monday night at 1:30am sober in Capitol Hill = no good...nooooo good, but you gotta learn I guess, right?
After everyone left, I then got to go to one of the top concerts of my life, and most of you know, I've been to a ridiculous amount of concerts, so saying this means it's serious. My lovely friend Gini got tickets to see Rufus Wainwright at the Pantages theater. The crowd was small and the concert so intimate. His sister Lucy Wainwright Roche opened for him, and you guys as soon as she opened her mouth I was hooked. My jaw dropped! Then Rufus came on, and I swooned with his dynamic voice and literally sat there in awe listening to his songs.
Frida Kahlo inspired outfit for Rufus Wainwright with Gini
It was beautiful how his songs show everything he's thinking and feeling. Now, I've been listening to the two of them non-stop...mooning over their voices and lyrics, I have a feeling I will be listening to them through the winter that's how obsessed I've become. If you want to check them out my favorites are: Call Your Girlfriend (Robyn Cover) from Lucy and this week for Rufus its Montauk and also Martha (it changes weekly though).

Halloween came in with a bang the next day, I was excited, but tired. This year most of the family chose to dress up in themed Alice in Wonderland costumes. I was of course, the White Rabbit, as I had just made the costume for a party I went to/did some work at earlier this fall. My older sister was the Queen of Hearts, her kids (besides my nephew who went as Batman) were The Mad Hatter, The White Queen, and Baby White Rabbit *adorable*! My brother's daughter went as Alice, which was just again, can I say adorable anymore in one paragraph?! We had a blast! I even convinced my mom to let me do her makeup, she went as a Raven so we did a really cool mask in makeup. Lol it was fun to spend time with my entire family, both of my brother's came, my aunt as well. We put on the Monster Mash, did the Time Warp, and Trick-or-Treated around my childhood neighborhood.
Halloween, Makeup, Wonderland, and a beautiful Raven
Who knew Halloween would be the holiday that brought us all together in full force? Lol I surely did not, but I'm insanely grateful that it did!!!
So yea, that was the craziness, I sit here typing it and still can't believe that that all happened in 2 weeks. Life has returned to normal for the most part, putting my apartment back together, drinking tea and getting back to a normal schedule. Starting to get excited for the holidays but mostly just enjoying the normalcy for a bit hahaha who'd have thought?
How is everyone else's fall going? Do you feel crazy busy? Looking forward to the Holidays?
It's Tuesday and I've got a rant to just go through and I can't even think about being pleasant and welcoming you to my blog...lol okay I know, that's rude but YOU GUYS!!! Every fiber in my body is annoyed and shouty and just wanting to take the world and shake it!!!
This week has been tagged as #FatShamingWeek on Twitter it is actually a popular trending topic. WHAT?! When did this become an acceptable topic or form of oppression in social media? CYBER BULLY MUCH?! Who in their right minds would even allow this to go on?
Most of you know, that I try to keep things under my hat about personal issues I've gone through that might not be the most acceptable topics to bring up in mixed company or public in general. I don't always feel the need to go on the soap box and spill the beans about topics like anorexia because I don't always want to be judged or looked at with those "oh poor you" eyes. Judgement, it's a b.
But, I can't sit idly by and NOT say anything when this has become more and more rampant and people think that they can get away with sitting behind a computer and anonymously commenting and posting pictures of people in a derogatory fashion!
So here goes, I have always been "bigger" some would say fat, but honestly I'm 5'10, and I'm the smallest/shortest person in my family. I have a large frame and I have come to accept that...now. Within the last year, as I posted in my last Talk Tuesday, I was diagnosed with hormonal imbalances (when they tested I basically had none) and a thyroid disease, and told that these things had been going on since puberty. PUBERTY!!! I hit puberty in 4th grade...can you believe that?! And honestly it shows, 4th grade is when I started to gain a lot of weight, before that I was just another cute kid the same size as my friends. But I didn't let it effect me too much, were there bullies who tortured me? Yes of course, I used to dread walking to school and dealing with one kid in particular who would throw insults my way as we waited to be let onto the school grounds. The lucky thing is in elementary school I was still quite outgoing and made friends easily, that and I had older siblings who kind of helped me through, protected me, and in 5th grade I was eligible to go to a pull out school for highly intelligent kids where I was around people who were more interested in what you could program into a computer and how to fold intricate notes then what you wore and how you looked.
5th grade...yuuupp
Unfortunately, that school dumped me right back into the local junior high school in 7th grade. So not only was I larger but I was coming back after being at a completely different school for two years. Yea, I did not look forward to that first day of school. Again, luckily for me I had my older sister who was and is only 13 months older, she would be my saving grace for most of my schooling from that point on. She helped me to meet new people and kept the terrorizing to a minimum. Her nickname was Xena and that girl was a giant! (In a good way) I am thankful for her because unfortunately the legacy for sports by my two older siblings made it even more difficult when the coaches realized I just wanted to do art and plan dances. Ugh, thinking about all that still makes me sick to my stomach. I could never live up to the hype of my sister in school, she was tall and beautiful and had records in shotputting. Guys would see us in pictures together and ask if she was available (guys I liked by the way) and I just wanted to melt into the walls most of the time. I call that point of my life the ugly duckling syndrome. So, I know where am I going with all this? Sometimes the back story takes a little time guys...so just hang in there....
Me and My Sister on the left
Some of you will say, well maybe you weren't active enough or you ate the wrong foods, but I was active and my parents were adamant about junk food and tv watching. They kept a tight control on all that, we didn't have pop or juices and we were constantly doing sports or dance or whatever. That's my only public service announcement as I move into what will be the basis of my story...high school the summer before my junior year...
Okay so I hated high school, again, I got there and didn't fit in, so I finally had had enough. At some point I got hooked up with some people who were all about encouraging "thinspiration" I'm sorry but that word is still linked for me with anorexia...and that's where I'm jumping into it. I was encouraged with these people to really get on the anorexia train, we had games to see who could eat the least in a day, we challenged ourselves to go to the gym for HOURS every day I think at one point during that summer I was at the YMCA for 6 hours a day. Then the big kicker happened when I learned about diet pills (this was before phen phen was banned from the USA) and started rampantly using and abusing them along with laxatives (yep I never do anything lightly). Did I lose weight? Sure...and I went back to high school in my junior year the skinniest I've ever been in my life. Do you want to know what size that was a 10! And that's still considered plus size!!!! AAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Are you starting to predict where this is going?
Did I get more attention, yes I did, but honestly I was the most miserable person EVER. AND did it get me what I really wanted lasting relationships with people and a partner who cared about me? Nope. It surely didn't. Want to know what it got me? CRAZY and to top it off I did irreversible and irrevocable damage to my body. That year I put myself in the hospital multiple times, I had at one point a heart palpitation situation and the muscles in my chest will never really be healed and feel normal again. Ever since that junior year they are tender and painful to the touch. At a size 10 my doctor told me that if I lost anymore weight he would have to admit me into the hospital that's where I bordered. And my sick brain at the time was pretty excited that I had gotten there, because after years of torment I thought I'd finally made it. Was I living a rewarding life though? No...everything I thought about revolved around food and those pills and working out, I couldn't handle much more and the rest of my life suffered for it. I had a friend look back at the pictures of me at that time, and her first comment was "You look like Halloween" I'm including those pictures just to really hit home for you...
Me at my skinniest, rocking crazy dark circles
The picture the "halloween" comment was made about
She also said, you look immensely unhappy, and you guys I totally was. I'm not going to lie, were there other things going on in my life that contributed to my unhappiness? Definitely, there were family issues happening, but overall this was the biggest contributor to my mental status and would eventually lead me to getting pulled out of high school early because of it. Did I mention I had a rough teenage years? Lol
So where do we go from here? I'm going to fast forward through my college years and bring you back up to 2 years ago when I was at my heaviest. I was a size 20 and had been on bed rest for about a year at that point. I was taking 13 different prescriptions for pain and muscle spasm. These medications made it impossible for me to lose weight, they slowed down my entire body. On top of that, I was told by all the doctor's I had been seeing at that time that until I finished my physical therapy (which I am still doing) that I shouldn't even attempt to work out as it would only aggravate my condition. I didn't even have a chance you guys!!! Although I'm not entirely pleased at what I look like in these photos, I'm going to include them because I think it's necessary.
Here's the thing, I'm not saying that having curves is better then being a size 2, I'm saying that you have to know what works for your body type and embrace it. I personally know I'm not ever going to be a size 2 until I'm pretty much decayed in the ground. We as "bigger" or "fat" people need to start becoming unapologetic about who we are and what we have to say. It's time for someone to say that #fatshaming is no longer an acceptable way of oppression and its no longer a topic of conversation. I am no longer okay with giving up your power because you are afraid someone is going to write you off for being FAT that is absolutely insane!
As some of you know, people don't know how to not talk to me or make sometimes weirdly inappropriate comments. It's been happening since I was 16, I'm approachable, recently I was with a friend shopping and the check out lady said to me, man, I'm so proud of you!! A bigger lady looking good and fabulous, it's such an inspiration! I politely and awkwardly said "thanks" and we walked out. At the car my friend asked me if I was offended, and all I had to say was "eh, it happens all the time, I mean, it's somewhat discouraging because I'm really not that "large" anymore I'm just curvy I got tons of "junk in the trunk" but I do wear large's and mediums which isn't anything crazy!!" But again, it's just another way for people to say to me, you are pretty but you are still fat. OH WELL honestly I get more attention walking down the streets at the size I am today then I ever did when I was a size 10. Because it's about how we hold ourselves, people are attracted to confidence and a great attitude, and it's also about not allowing someone to discount you because you aren't their idea of "pretty". Today I'm almost back to a size that fits my frame, what were once my "skinny saved clothes" from before the surgery are now loose, but it's all because I got lucky with a great doctor and the medications I'm using are working and keeping everything in check. It's not because I made some crazy health change, it's because I finally figured out what was wrong with me.
Please, please, please, I beg you readers to really redefine what you allow the media to dictate to you. This idea that it's okay to randomly tell people they need to lose weight and get healthy is just ridiculous. For me, it lead to decades of frustration, DECADES...and years spent in counseling trying to redefine how my self-worth was not tied to my appearance and pant size, as well as body-dismorphia which is still a hard thing I have to work on. I still catch myself whining, I look in the mirror at what is "fat" on my stomach but honestly most of it is SCAR TISSUE from my surgery which I will probably never get rid of. So before you judge someone for having a "spare tire" or "beer belly" remember that you don't know everyone's story. Please don't allow your friends to make jokes at the expense of larger people just like you wouldn't allow your friends to make gay or racial slurs around you.
I feel like these two ladies really said it best. Watch, discuss, and circulate. I love you guys just the way you are!!!!
Hello you wonderful glam girls! Thanks for coming back and checking out my blog!! I know it's a little new still, but I'm working on tons of content to blast your way. So today is Tuesday and I thought I'd tell you guys a little more about me. So get a cup of tea, settle in, and get ready for a little cozy chat with yours truly.
Since I hurriedly threw this up I wanted to give you a little more of a background on ME! My name is Devin, I'm 28, and my "real" job is as an artist and graphic designer. I'm an aries, single, and have a wonderfully large crazy family that I spend tons of time with. Hahaha is that a good description?
Okay let's get to the good stuff...some would say I'm addicted to makeup. Which is weird, because for most of my life I was a complete tomboy, had no idea how to do any sort of anything that was girly including makeup, hair, dressing myself...it was pretty terrible. I'm including photo's to really drive that image home (don't judge, I was a child of the 80's)
But then I got into modeling and started to really learn how to put myself together. I had always had a love for fashion and makeup, I just didn't know how to style myself. I just knew that if I could get as close to Gwen Stefani's look as possible I might have a chance. Enter the blonde hair I rocked for a very very very long time.
Even after all the things I learned from the makeup artists and stylists I befriended, I was still pretty lazy about makeup. I knew how to do a couple looks that looked good on me, and that was about it. I still preferred to spend my time doing other things, I would touch up my under eye concealer when my eyeliner ran off my face (which is frequently did at those times) and move on to whatever else I was interested in. (Mostly painting, boys, music...etc.)
AND THEN LIFE HAPPENED
To make a long story short, I made some bad decisions, dated the wrong people, I was kind of an asshole and slowly but surely ran myself into the ground emotionally and physically. This quote describes it to a "T".
Literally the day before I hit the brick wall
So I got hit with the brick wall, which was for me a surgery that caused permanent nerve damage and basically being bedridden for 2 1/2 years, amongst side effects like Fibromyalgia, and then finding out I had Hormone and Thyroid issues (but that's another PSA lol). Being on bed rest I had to get to know me and I also had a LOT of time to watch things on my computer, and that's where I found youtube, and what truly makes me happy! After watching hours and hours of tutorials I started to get the hang of it, I learned I could use my art school color mixing knowledge to do looks and it wasn't so scary anymore. I learned a lot and the more I experimented, the more comments I got about my makeup and then I started being asked to do other people's makeup!! I KNOW can you believe it?! It made me so happy to do it as well, making women look beautiful literally puts the biggest smile on my face.
What did I learn you say?
Well I learned that inner beauty is the key, being strong, being a glamazon (hence the name) and owning your beauty in a dynamic way isn't a bad thing. I always gave my power and beauty away to other people because I didn't want to be labeled as a "bitch" or because I thought my beauty wasn't the right kind of look you were supposed to have. I thought I constantly needed to be striving to do something "more intellectual" and constantly fought myself with the beauty is only skin deep mantra trying to keep up some appearance of who I was supposed to be that was mainly in my head. So that's the funny thing, the more I embrace myself the more I am happy and glowing and I think that the stigma that surrounds the beauty industry in regards to feminism needs to be addressed.
Okay so what does this mean for you?
In a nutshell it basically means that this blog was set up, yes, to give tutorials and tips on makeup and fashion, but mostly as a lifestyle booster! You are beautiful and wonderful and on this page I want you to walk away always feeling that you are!!
Okay, well I think that's enough chat for today, I would love to hear your stories and any suggestions of things you would want to talk about in the coming weeks!!!
